2 – Too Much Opportunity

Opportunity is everywhere: I know it, you know it, yet why do we never seem to follow through and take advantage of what we have? The answer is there is too much choice! To demonstrate check out this short video starring my housemates 14 month old puppy Jonah who kindly ‘volunteered’ to demonstrate this principle for us!

So what did you think of Jonah’s YouTube debut? I think he played the part perfectly! What he did is often known as chasing the next shining object. When we start out we set out to follow one opportunity but on the way, out the corner of our eye we see something bright and shiny that we think is better, so naturally we change direction. But of course on the way to that new opportunity, another shiny object pops up and we follow that instead. This goes on and the end result is that we have nothing to show for our pile of half completed goals.

Can you see the difference however when I gave Jonah one goal and how quickly he completed it? Now if I had kept filming I could have demonstrated that by throwing out one toy at a time that he would have avoided confusion and completed three goals very quickly!

You Can Have Any Colour As Long As It Is Black!

Henry Ford, when building the early Model T Ford understood that to achieve his goals he had to eliminate choice and keep things simple. He gave his customers one choice in the colour of their cars and that was black. By doing this he didn’t waste time customising each car and spending hours as his customers agonised over the Phantom Blue, Royal Blue or Dark Blue. This saved him a heap of time and money and made him extremely successful.

Now what areas of your life are suffering because too much choice is slowing you down? Run with one idea completely and then move onto the next and you will complete twice as much in half the time!

Check back later in the week for a personal update!
