Love To Read
A big part of my journey started when I read two books. They were on investing but with the underlying message of personal development and the you can do anything attitude that most of us forget we are capable of. Those books were Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, and From 0 To 130 Properties In 3.5 Years by Steve McKnight. No doubt many of you would have read these books before and if not, I highly recommend them both.
Control The Controllable
Another book I read recently was that of athlete’s John MacLean’s story. He talks about controlling the controllable. In other words, some things in life you can control, such as the attitude you have and the decisions you make. Other things you cannot control, such as the weather. There is no point in getting upset with what we cannot control and it is up to us to make the most of what we can! If we were to get upset about the weather every time it did not suit us, how much fun would life be?
A Story Of Massive Courage
John is an amazing person as at the age of 22 he was a promising Rugby player and super athlete, little did he know that his life was about to change. Whilst cycling home one day he was hit by a truck and suffered massive injuries. He punctured both his lungs and broke 17 bones including his spine which meant that he would never walk again. John made the decision that this physical restriction would never control him. He could not control what happened but he could control what he made of his life from that day onwards.
I’ll leave it up to you to read his book titled Full Circle if you want to know in great detail what he went through. I will tell you that he went on to become the first wheelchair athlete to complete a Hawaiian Ironman, that he has swum the English Channel and competed in two sports at two seperate Olympics winning a medal in 2008 (I want tell you what colour in case you read the book!)
Everyday we complain about our jobs, our friends and our money but often don’t take control of our thoughts in a positive way. Instead of determining how we can achieve our goals based on our limitations, we let them control us. John MacLean dreamt of being a professional athlete, when he lost the use of his legs that dream never died. If you find yourself complaining maybe you should take a leaf out of John’s book and take control!
