16 – How Do You Measure A (Wo)Man?

Here is a theme that you would have thought about in the past whether you released it or not. We tend to underestimating our friends, workmates, customer and those who we meet everyday. If you are not yet sure what I am talking about this will set you straight. Have you ever thought to yourself ‘Don’t they know who I am?’ That statement is not necessary arrogant or looking down on others, it is a natural thought we have when we are treated like idiots or inappropriately. I would like to word it another way to take away ‘Don’t you know what I am capable of?’

Measuring-manThe reason I bring this up is that it is important that you learn to not judge others immediately, but rather assume the person you are dealing with can add great value to your life, as they probably can. Opportunity is in our faces everyday, yet we are often too blind to see this. I want to you learn to recognise these opportunities and assume that every person you meet can add value to your life and vice versa.

A few years ago, I was captain of my basketball team and starting point guard and had a great season. The following season we got a new coach who decided I should not be captain and cut my minutes from 30 to 4 per game. I was never given a chance to prove I was the best leader and a player capable of making a difference to the team.

The reason for the coach not giving me a chance was that he was blinded by another star playing coming through. Often we can be so fixated on one thing that we fail to see the opportunities that lie in other areas. My opportunity came four games in to the season when unfortunately the other point guard got injured early in the game. I sat on the bench knowing I was the best replacement to go on when the coach said ‘We’re stuffed, we don’t have another point gaurd.’ After that vote of confidence he put me on!

The funny thing was that I had planned to show him that day that he didn’t know what I was capable of by running home after the game to prove my superior fitness and work ethic. I was expecting to play 4 minutes that day but ended up playing 35. Never one to back away from what I said I would do I ran home anyway, the whole 26km!

Having been associated with sport at a high level I can say the same thing happens around clubs day in and day out. Teammates and coaches can be too focus on who has all the talent and forgets the guy who brings energy to a session or who is prepared to play their role which is effectively as important to the teams success than whoever scores the goals.

I’ve been ripped off in business, dumped by basketball clubs and not appreciated by friends, but I figure it is their loss. I posed the question at the start of this blog ‘How do you measure a (wo)man?’ Give me integrity, loyalty and the chance to make a difference, don’t judge as you won’t be judged. If you possess those qualities you are a giant in my book! The first lesson is judge others less and let them prove what they are capable of, in fact encourage them to use their talents. The second lesson is give yourself permission to shine and don’t let others limiting thoughts change your path.

10 – Failing First To Achieve Greater Success

This week my childhood hero was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. We build up our sports hero’s and the media show us the victories or the controversies of their careers. Often we do not have an understanding of how they became so good and what drives a person. This week Michael Jordan was recognised for all he contributed to the sport of basketball, but what made him sooo good?

Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan

Sure he was an unbelievable talent, but many talents go no where. What separates the champions is their mindset. Here is a famous quote from Michael Jordan which shows the reason he is the greatest ever.

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

We give up too easily in life when we fail. Failing is hard to take, it can be embarrassing, a shot to the pride or cause self doubt so why would anyone want to risk failing? Imagine the embarrassment Jordan suffered from being cut from the High School basketball and not being considered as one of the top ten players in the school. If he had given up at that point  his life would have panned out much, much differently.

So what has this got to do with you or me? We all fail and we fail often. How we react to those failures however is what makes us stronger or weaker. I talk about Choosing Your Own Success and to be the best we can be we must be prepared to take the knocks and doubters in life. Michael Jordan thanked his doubters in his Hall of Fame acceptance speech saying they played an important part in driving him to greater success.

Life is all about choice, you can agree with your doubters and give up, or back yourself and fail over and over again so you can learn. I will leave you with one more quote from Michael Jordan which highlights another common attitude of those who succeed.

“I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.”

P.S Did I mention that I am only two degrees of separation from Michael Jordan!! I talk about this principle more in my book. Feel free to download the first two chapters on the right of this page!

6 – Follow Big Passions First!

Basketball is a big passion of mine and today I am coaching the St Thomas’ All Star team, the team in which I played for back in primary school in 1993!! I have the luxury of being able to sit courtside in between games and write this because I made the decision many years ago to follow my big passion first. After all if I was still an accountant I would be currently sitting in a 2 x 2 cubicle willing the clock to reach 5pm. I talk about this in last weeks TGIF blog.

Your Passion Should Be Your World

Your Passion Should Be Your World

The problem is often our work dominates our lives and dictates what we can and can’t do. I bet that given the choice you would love to go on a holiday right now, travel is a passion of most people. The problem is you are most likely not able to simply catch the next flight to paradise because you have to ask permission from your boss, then are given only 4 weeks a year to travel. Anyone else see something wrong with that? We spend 48 weeks doing something we are less passionate about only to reward ourselves with 4 weeks of a decent chance to enjoy life to the max. Hopefully you are passionate about your job but most people aren’t.

A love of sport and basketball has always been in my family and I’ve had good mentoring in following my big passions first. Mum is a teacher and as part of her contract she negotiated that she be able to play her three games of basketball a week and come to work after her games if there was a clash with work. How good is that? Come to think about it, how possible is that? More than you think is my bet.

Another example is a friend of mine Dave Bradley who is passionate about his family and so he spends time with them whenever he can. He once said to me that when he goes to Kinda on parent days that he is the only Dad, all the other Dad’s are at work. Given the choice, would you prefer to go to work or play with your kids at Kinda? Dave knows his priorities and follows his passions in life. He once said to me that when he goes for a walk in the middle of the day everyone else he sees is of a retirement age, they finally have time to enjoy the freedom of a nice day after a lifetime of waiting!

My thoughts, why wait? Enjoy everything life has to offer everyday and allocate and negotiate for more time to send on your passions.

I talk about this in my book, If You Believe You Can Achieve, Find out how I escaped the 9 to 5 grind in my book and why being passionate about what I do is top of my list. Included in the two free chapters to on the right of this page is a chapter on Passion I suggest you read, it may just spark something within yourself to make a change.
