5 – Many Ways To Be Right!!

There are many ways to be right, whilst not all are the same or equal, if they are right for you they are right! Am I confusing you yet?! Let me simplify this a little more and say that there are a lot of ways to reach a similar goal and depending on your belief system there are certain ways you can achieve that goal. What I want to demonstrate today is that where most people fail is in their appreciation to see that two very different views on the same thing can actually both be right.

If I was to ask different people the question ‘What is the quickest way to make a million dollars?‘ I would get some very different responses. Here are just some answers I would expect to get:

  • I would save every penny I earn and put it in the bank. In 25 years I will have a million dollars.
  • I would buy a property and it will double in value twice in 20 years and I will have a million dollars quicker.
  • I would work a second job and  pay off my home sooner
  • I would start a business and earn that within 3 years
  • That is not possible, I could never have a million dollars
Which Way Is Right?

Which Way Is Right?

All these answers are different but correct despite the different time frames and methods. Each person has a belief system that will determine what they see as the ‘right’ answer. Now can you imagine that the business owner who knows that can make a million dollars in three years trying to convince the saver that they are doing it wrong? The saver will say that the business owner is taking a risk and it is not possible, at least their method is guaranteed. This argument could continue and the problem is that all five answers above are right but if each party is stubborn is narrow minded in their views you will never get anywhere.

This is not limited to money beliefs either, if I believe a perfect steak should be cooked for 15 minutes and someone else says 18 minutes and someone else again 22 minutes, who is right? Everyone! Whilst the steaks would come out rare, medium and well done it doesn’t matter, to each person it is the perfect steak. What if I have the hiccups how many ways can this be solved? What is the best way to travel across Australia? Car? Bus? Train? Plane?

The lesson here is to understand that you have a certain belief system, but so does everyone else. Ever heard of being as stubborn as Mule? Well if you are not prepared to compromise and understand other peoples positions then unfortunately both parties will hold each other back from achieving their goals. In Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People he talks of win win or no deal. I strongly agree with this attitude as why should their be a loser in any transaction. We are all too often prepared to settle for for win lose in life to get our own way. So much more can be achieved through understanding each others belief systems, but then again who am I to say I am right!! ;-)
